the pope's exorcist i recc'ed this to a friend so much that i was worried he wouldn't enjoy it. ultimately he came to the same opinion as me: russell crowe doesn't half look like he's having fun in this. still, there's definitely something sinister about this in the way i think there's something generally sinister about any film that takes exorcism as a real practice, especially one endorsed by a "true story" by someone high up in the catholic church. demonic possession isn't real, and there's some real audacity in not only pretending so, but also using the idea of demons to try and excuse the catholic church of its greatest crimes.
hereditary text about the film here
heretic saw someone suggesting they should review this on god awful movies but for a film about religion, it's not really about religion at all, and that's not me being smart about it; the film explicitly states several times over that it is about control. it's about control in the way hugh grant's character asks two young women inappropriate questions about polygamy and magic underwear; it's about control in the way he uses social pressure to trick them and to try and seem reasonable when he's not being reasonable at all; it's about control in the fact that there are only women in those cages and topher grace gets to come and go without being bothered. it's really not subtle about this fact. (also hugh grant killed in this, i'm so glad he's in his character actor era.)
